In the early days of communication before modern digital technology, postal services were critical in connecting the world. Mail was written by hand, sorted manually, and often carried across the high seas for months before reaching the recipient.

In 1919, the first formal Post Office in Singapore was set up at the Old Parliament House. As the volume of mail grew, the Post Office moved locations and smaller post offices were set up across Singapore to better reach residents.

In 1928, the General Post Office (GPO) moved into the Fullerton Building as its anchor tenant, occupying three floors. By 1998, Singapore Post again moved into its own building at Eunos Road, housing its corporate headquarters and mail processing hub, equipped with the region's most modern and efficient mail sorting systems.

9 October 2017 marks a new milestone for SingPost – the official opening of the brand new General Post Office (GPO) at the SingPost Centre. Melding heritage and modernity, the design of the new GPO is inspired by the rich and classical architecture of the GPO at Fullerton Building, while incorporating features that provide 24/7 access to essential services that fit the connected lifestyles of the digital age.

The General Post Office of Singapore stamp issue is a commemoration of this significant milestone.
