On 4 August 1983, a set of three stamps and a miniature sheet will be issued to mark Singapore's participation in the Bangkok International Stamp Exhibition 1983, BANGKOK 1983, as the exhibition is otherwise called, will be held from 4 to 13 August 1983 in Bangkok, Thailand. The exhibition is being organised by the Communications Authority of Thailand in collaboration with the Philatelists' Association of Thailand to celebrate the centennial of the Thai postal services and the first issue of Thai postage stamps. It is also the first international stamp exhibition to be held in an Asean country.

This special issue is a classic example of "stamps-on-stamps" design and is highly recognisable among the Commonwealth collectors. Stamp designs featured on this stamp issue includes - Straits Settlements 1867 12¢ stamp against Old Singapore map (10¢), Straits Settlements King Edward VII $500 stamp against Johore Treaty (35¢), King George VI $2 stamp against Malay Archipelago map ($1) and 150th Anniversary of Founding Singapore $10 stamp against Raffles’ Letter ($2).
