2015 World Stamp Exhibition (Series 3)

Issue date 28 Aug 2014

Overview

The Association of Singapore Philatelists (ASP), with effort to commemorate Singapore's golden jubilee in 2015, successfully bidded for the hosting rights of World Stamp Exhibition in 2015, with support of the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP - International Federation of Philately). With the theme "Stamps of all Ages", 4 sets of past issues, with designs from the "1962 - 1966: Fishes, Orchids and Birds Definitives" (1st series), "1970: Osaka Expo: Seashells and Guppy" (2nd series), "1961: National Day" (3rd series) and "1960: National Day" are selected to revive the memories of collectors, as well as to showcase the developments that Singapore had achieved through the years.

This year we showcase the third series of the stamps, "1961: National Day" with both stamps having a common design showing four hands clasping the wrists of one another against a background map of Singapore. The two stamps come with background colours of brown and green respectively.

The "1961: National Day" stamps were first issued on the 3rd June 1961 to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of National Day of the State of Singapore with the theme "Unity of the People". The stamp design symbolises the national unity of the people of Singapore in their aspirations for democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality. It also represents one of the unique identities of Singapore, multiracial community coming together as one united nation. Today, "Unity of the People" is achieved, and as a nation, we celebrate the togetherness of the multiracial community and draw strength from the multiple traditions.
