National Service is a subject of great importance to Singapore and Singaporeans. The national serviceman is likely to be someone we know. He may be our neighbour, our best friend, our brother or our colleague. He is called to protect our heritage and our way of life.

1992 commemorates 25 years of National Service. In 1967, National Service was introduced in Singapore. It met the pressing need for a credible armed forces. With independence, Singapore had stood alone facing the economic and political uncertainties with only two infantry battalions, two modest training ships and no air force. Today, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is a tightly-knit, highly efficient fighting force comprising well-trained, disciplined soldiers and reservists, capable of operating sophisticated weapon systems. It has become a citizen army that every Singaporean is proud of.

On the 20¢ stamps are the military men representing the Army, Navy and Air Force standing proudly together in their respective uniforms, reflecting the unity and integration of the three services in the Singapore Armed Forces. The 35¢ stamp shows the military men in action, well-trained and confident in the handling of their military hardware. The sophisticated weapons of AMX-13 used by the Army, the Missile Corvette by the Navy and the F16 by the Air Force grace the $1 stamp. The three stamps are refreshing in approach and attractively designed by Thomas Koh.
