50th Anniversary of College of Family Physicians Singapore

Issue date 30 Jun 2021

Overview

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the College of Family Physicians Singapore. Established in 1971, the College was the vision of a group of determined general practitioners, who sought to advance the practice of Family Medicine.

In the past half century, the College developed several postgraduate programmes to address the need of family doctors. These courses, ranging from the Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine (GDFM), Master of Medicine in Family Medicine [MMed(FM)] to the advance specialty Fellowship of the College of Family Physicians Singapore [FCFP(S)] have gone from strength to strength, with many family doctors trained and qualified as a result. It is through the relentless pursuit of education and advocacy that family physicians are empowered to provide the best care for patients in Singapore.

The College has also been very active in the global Family Medicine fraternity, having successfully organized the 10th and 18th World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) World Conferences in Family Medicine in 1983 and 2007 respectively.

Today, trained family doctors can be found serving the communities in various settings, be it in primary care, community hospitals and even in general hospitals. Many are in leadership positions in our healthcare system. They have all played crucial roles in our nation's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, providing surveillance, early detection and timely treatment.

Family doctors bring a special and unique perspective, that of a physician whose principal focus is on patients and their families. This set of commemorative stamps showcases the contributions of family doctors in Singapore, and mark the beginning of the next chapter for Family Medicine in Singapore.
