As a small island not naturally endowed with an abundance of water or land, Singapore has been able to overcome its water challenges in the last 40 years, and turn its vulnerability into a strategic asset.

By investing in water technology and adopting an integrated approach to water management, Singapore has developed a diversified and sustainable water supply system known as the Four National Taps comprising water from local catchment; imported water; ultra-clean, high-grade reclaimed water branded as NEWater and desalinated water.

A pervasive network of 32 major rivers and more than 7000 km of drains and canals channel stormwater to 17 reservoirs for the city's drinking water supply.

To ensure the sustainability of Singapore's water supply, the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme aims to transform the water bodies in scenic spots and at the same time, call upon all Singaporeans to play their part to use water wisely, keep the waterways clean and build a closer relationship by enjoying this precious resource.

This stamp issue is released in conjunction with the World Water Day, an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of water and advocating for the sustainable management of water resources.
