Behind The Scenes is a special three-part feature which gives you some insight into the work done behind our sales counters before you get your stamps and philatelic products. The first in this series covered the printing of stamps (Miniature World Issue 9). This article on the production of first day covers and presentation packs, is the second in the series.
First day covers are officially produced envelopes for new stamp issues. They will be affixed with one or more stamps of the new stamp issue and post-marked with the date of issue which is the date the stamps are first placed on sale to the public.
Presentation packs are specially designed folders with the full set of stamps of a new issue in mint or cancelled-to-order condition. The stamps in the packs are mounted on protective strips. Background information on the stamps is provided on the folders.
These covers and packs are usually designed by local artists who are commissioned to design the postage stamps. Occasionally, the job may be contracted out to a third party.
The design of the covers and packs reflects the stamp theme and complements the stamp designs. These products are very collectible and contain a wealth of information on Singapore. They are ideal too as gifts to clients, friends and relatives.
