Eric Kong - A Stamp Designer's Journey
About the Designer

Eric Kong graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and has been working as an independent graphic designer for nearly two decades. During his career, he has worked with various clients, including government agencies and private enterprises. His journey into stamp designing began in 2000, when he was given the opportunity to design the Postal Landmarks stamp collection.

How did you get started in stamp design, and how long have you been in the field?

My passion for stamps dates back to my childhood years when I avidly collected stamps from various countries. My journey into stamp design started in 2000 when I was presented with the opportunity to design a set of stamps for the Postal Landmarks stamp collection. Designing stamps is a great honour for me as it allows me to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s heritage and history. Being entrusted with the task of creating stamps representing our culture, commemorating significant events, and celebrating the accomplishments of our people allows me to showcase our nation's unique identity to the world.

Can you guide us through the design rationale behind creating different types of stamps, such as commemorative, definitive or special editions?

Designing a commemorative stamp is a meticulous process that involves careful consideration of various elements to ensure that the stamp appropriately honours and commemorates the event, person, or theme it represents. Understanding the significance of the event, person, or theme is crucial in creating an accurate and meaningful design. Designing a definitive stamp involves creating a universally accepted representation of a country’s identity. The design of a definitive stamp have to be clear and simple. Definitive stamps are used for regular postage, so the imagery should be easily recognisable and not overly complex. Designing a special edition stamps involves creating a unique and memorable piece that captures the essence of a specific event, celebration, or theme so the design elements must directly relate to the theme and capture the event’s essence.

Are there specific themes or subjects that you particularly enjoy designing for stamps?

I enjoy designing stamps across various themes because each theme offers a unique approach and creative challenge.

Do you draw inspiration from specific sources or have any artists who have influenced your stamp design style?

My stamp designs aren’t universally influenced by any specific artist. Inspiration for my stamp designs can be drawn from a variety of sources. I often integrate my designs with illustrations, drawing inspiration from the beauty of nature, and I stay current with all design software and techniques.

In your expert opinion, what essential elements contribute to the visual appeal and effectiveness of a stamp design?

Even within the constraints of limited space, the principles of appealing and effective design are vital in stamp design. Clear and readable images and text are crucial for conveying the message. A balanced composition, harmonising elements, colours, and spacing, creates a pleasing layout. Consistency in design elements, colours, and typography is key when designing a series of stamps for a cohesive collection.

Have you encountered any interesting or unusual requests or challenges in your stamp designing career?

As a stamp designer, I often encounter interesting and unusual requests. For instance, I am tasked with designing stamps for unique and unconventional events such as commemorating future occasions, futuristic architecture projects, themes on inventions and technology, and historical events.

Despite the decreasing use of stamps for mailing due to the prevalence of email, these challenges provide me with opportunities to showcase my creativity, problem-solving skills, and adaptability. This allows me to create stamps that are not only visually captivating but also hold significant meaning and relevance for collectors and the public.
