In recent years, Singapore has shown significant progress in philately. This is evident in the range of quality postage stamps produced and the greater number of stamp exhibitions organised locally.
Our progress in philately has brought us to our next major challenge - the holding of Singapore '95, the first world stamp exhibition to be held in Singapore, in 1995. A world stamp exhibition is a prestigious event where postal administrations, stamp dealers and collectors from all over the world meet to show their exhibits, promote philately and further strengthen their relationships.
Singapore '95 is organised by the Association of Singapore Philatelists (ASP), a national philatelic body comprising renowned philatelists and major stamp clubs in the Republic. The event is also sponsored by Singapore Telecom.
To commemorate this grand philatelic exhibition, we will be releasing a series of stamps and miniature sheets featuring orchids from 1991 to 1995. Proceeds from the sale of these Orchids Series stamps and miniature sheets will be used to fund Singapore '95. The first of these Orchids Series will be released on 24 April 1991. A Singapore '95 exhibition logo has been specially designed by Chua Ban Har for the exhibition.
The main feature of the logo is the globe which indicates the popularity of stamp collecting as a hobby around the world. The designer has skilfully positioned our national symbol, the Singapore Lion, on the equator where Singapore is located. Olive leaves are placed alongside the globe to highlight the power of friendship among stamp collectors. The logo is complete with a stylised perforated postage stamp - the hallmark of philately. According to Mr Koh Seow Chuan, the President of ASP, the underlying message for the Singapore '95 exhibition logo is ultimately "to achieve international friendship through philately". The exhibition logo will also be featured in the gutter pair of stamps as well as miniature sheets for the Orchids Series issues.
