Overview
The sheer scale, spectacle and spirit of the nationwide celebrations of Singapore's silver jubilee of independence in 1990 will no doubt be indelibly printed in the memories of many Singaporeans for years to come. To preserve these memories, a commemorative stamp issue entitled "25 Years of Independence" will be issued.
The stamp issue comprising four stamps and a stamp booklet is set for release on 16 Aug 90 to coincide with the opening of Singpex '90 at Pan Pacific Hotel. The underlying theme of the stamp issue is reflected in the title of the 25th Anniversary Celebration Song, "One People, One Nation, One Singapore".
The 15 cents stamp reflects Singapore's military achievements and has the caption, "One Nation". Personnel from the three components of the Singapore Armed Forces viz Army, Navy and Air Force are shown in their military attire, ready to defend the nation. The different racial groups who make up the people of Singapore are depicted on the 35 cents stamp bearing the caption, "One Singapore". Even as Singaporeans celebrate the achievements of the past 25 years, they also look forward to another 25 successful years. This sentiment is captured on the 75 cents stamp with its caption, "One Hope". Singapore having achieved nationhood, her people are also experiencing a sense of being "Singaporean", notwithstanding their cultural differences. This sense of a common identity amidst cultural diversity and Singapore's aspiration to also be a regional and international centre for the fine arts is interpreted on the $1 stamp, captioned "One People".
All the people appearing on the four stamps with their faces aglow reflect the convivial and celebrative mood of commemorating this milestone in Singapore's history. The first day covers, presentation packs and stamp booklets carry the official 25th Anniversary Celebration logo. As an added memento of the spirit of the celebrations, an excerpt from the 25th Anniversary Celebration Song is printed on the Presentation Pack.
The stamp booklet contains ten 15 cents stamps and features the Singapore Armed Forces. The booklet cover with its Singapore flag flying high, befits the mood of the celebrations.
The Singpex '90 logo is printed on the stamp booklet cover. Sales from the booklets will go towards funding this international stamp exhibition. The Singpex '90 logo also appears on the selvedge of the stamp sheets for this stamp issue. This is the first time the name of an exhibition is printed on our stamp sheets.
A set of four specially designed datestamps, one for each day of the exhibition (16 to 19 Aug 90) will also be available at our booth at Singpex '90. The datestamp designs reflect the Celebration theme, "One People, One Nation, One Singapore".
All the stamps, booklet and special datestamps together with the significance of the stamp issue and the exhibition, will make the items truly special mementos.
