Overview
The new Tourism Series stamps portray our clean and green island in the sun as a desirable holiday destination with varied attractions and activities. The low value stamps feature popular tourist attractions and social-cultural activities. The richness of our multi-racial heritage is the subject of the high value stamps.
The low values issue comprises nine stamps and a stamp booklet. The Singapore Zoological Gardens, rated among the world's top 10 zoos is featured on the 5 cents stamp. Ever-popular Sentosa, promoted as "Singapore's Discovery Island", appears on the 15 cents stamp and the stamp booklet. The Singapore River, site of the annual Hong Bao carnival held during the Chinese New Year, is on the 20 cents stamp. The exciting international Dragon Boat Festival is depicted on the 25 cents stamp. This stamp gives an impression of the remodelled Raffles Hotel after her renovations. Bird singing/watching, a popular activity with locals and tourists alike is featured on the 35 cents stamp. Jurong Bird Park which has the world's largest walk-in aviary, comes next on the 40 cents stamp.
The 50 cents stamp captures the colour of illuminated boat floats that add to the Chinese New Year festivities along the Singapore River. Peranakan Place, the unique row of early 20th century shophouses restored to preserve and promote Peranakan culture, is on the 75 cents stamp, the last low value stamp in the issue.
The special photogravure printing for the low value stamps will surely delight collectors. Collectors will also be pleased with the Tourism stamp booklets. The booklet covers have a varnished finish and are printed in two colours which alternate across the whole design area of the booklet. This method of printing is known as rainbow printing. The brand new booklet has an adhesive strip that holds the front cover of the booklet to the back. Once the booklet is opened, the adhesive strip comes off automatically. A special flap which collectors can simply lift to slip the front cover of the booklet under, secures the stamps in place. This special feature keeps the stamps in good condition for use anytime. The stamp booklet with its finish makes it not only practical but also appealing.
