This year, we commemorate the anniversaries of two organisations – Raffles Institution (RI) and Sport Singapore (SportSG). The Anniversaries stamp issue consists of 2 stamps – “RI Bicentennial” to pay homage to the rich history and tradition of RI and “50th anniversary of SportSG” celebrates SportSG’s 50 years of serving Singapore through Sport. RI is the oldest English medium school in Singapore, with a history that paralleled the nation’s history. This year marks the school’s 200th anniversary. Separately, SportSG celebrates 50 years of serving Singapore through Sport. It will continue to work with a vast network of public-private-people sector to enable all to Live Better Through Sport.

Raffles Institution Bicentennial When Sir Stamford Raffles founded Raffles Institution (RI) in 1823, he sought to establish a premier educational institution that would serve the country well. The school’s vision – to be the Hope of a Better Age – is encapsulated in its Latin motto, Auspicium Melioris Aevi, adapted from Raffles’ own coat of arms. Over 200 years, numerous students have walked through the doors of RI and have emerged as thinkers, leaders and pioneers of character, making significant contributions to the country and shaping its direction.

As the oldest English medium school in Singapore, RI’s history paralleled the nation’s history. From survival-driven education during Singapore’s industrialisation to efficiency-driven and ability-based education during Singapore’s transition to a skills-intensive and knowledge-based economy, RI has been at the forefront of educational change. As Singapore enters its next phase of development, RI continues to innovate, leveraging on technology in teaching and learning, and embracing diversity, inclusivity and community education as the foundation of its educational experience. In 2023, RI celebrates its 200th anniversary with hope and optimism for the future, and with the wish that Rafflesians will always ask questions with curiosity, seek solutions with creativity and act with courage to improve the social, economic and environmental well-being of society.

50th Anniversary of Sport Singapore The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) was established in 1973 through the merger of the National Sports Promotion Board and the National Stadium Corporation. The aim was to streamline and co-ordinate the development and promotion of sport and sport facilities in support of the ‘Sports for All’ vision. SSC was rebranded as Sport Singapore (SportSG) in 2014 to emphasise its role in inspiring the community of partners in growing sporting Singapore. Through these partnerships there are much more sporting opportunities and access for everyone; enhancing inclusivity and integration in communities and providing the impetus for a vibrant sport industry and ecosystem.

As SportSG celebrates 50 years of serving Singapore through Sport, SportSG will continue to work with a vast network of public-private-people sector to enable all to Live Better Through Sport.
