Sports fans or not, people around the world sit up when the spectacle that is the Summer Olympics comes around every four years. In 2024, the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad are being held in France from 26 July to 11 August. This will be the third time the Games are in France—it has been host twice before, in 1900 and 1924.

The Olympic Games are not just the oldest multi-sport event in the world, with roots as far back as 776 BC; they are also the largest. The 19 days of competition this year will see some 10,500 athletes gathering from 206 countries. Considered as the best in their fields, they are vying for glory in 329 events in 32 sports. At the same time, they are allies united by their dedication to their sport. The athletes who come are inspired, and in turn inspire. Indeed, the Games are described as celebratory, with an Olympic Charter that promotes friendship, solidarity and fair play.

In Paris 2024, the celebrations will start with a grand opening ceremony that is being planned, for the first time, not in a traditional stadium setting but as a boat parade along the famous River Seine. Another icon of the city, the Eiffel Tower, is featured on the 5,084 medals ready to be handed out—both its image as well as scraps of iron from the original tower.

Also for the first time in the Games' history, as many women athletes are taking part as men. It is a far cry from the Ancient Games which women were banned from even watching.

This issue of stamps commemorates the 2024 Summer Olympics with a series showing some of our nation's sporting strengths. Singapore's contingent to the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad is our 18th since our debut at the 1948 Games.

Our athletes will be among 10,500 from 206 countries vying for glory. More than 5,000 medals are being readied for the 329 events in 32 sports.

This oldest and largest of multi-sports competitions in the world is being held across 35 venues in France from 26 July to 11 August 2024. It is beloved as a global celebration of athleticism, friendship, solidarity and fair play.
