Marine Life Series - Crabs

Issue date 21 Aug 1992

Overview

For food lovers and indeed most Singaporeans, the mention of crabs will most probably conjure up images of delicious, freshly cooked seafood dishes. We are mostly unaware that there is much more to crabs than as food.

Crabs are indeed a major player in the natural ecological system. They are an integral part of our environment and worthy of conservation. On-going research has uncovered more and more species from Singapore waters. At the same time, rapid development has made conservation and education increasingly important.

This issue is co-sponsored by HongkongBank as part of its Care-for-Nature environment conservation and education programme. Launched in 1989, the programme aims to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of ASEAN's natural environment so as to help preserve the unique natural heritage in the region.

As in the first stamp issue co-sponsored by HongkongBank featuring Garden Birds, collectors can buy two types of attractively-designed pre-cancelled covers: Singapore Philatelic Bureau's first day covers and HongkongBank's CFN covers. Along with each print is a brief description of the crab. The print will also include the actual stamp with the official first day of issue datestamp and a certificate of authenticity.

This stamp issue will be released in conjunction with Singpex 92, an international stamp exhibition to be held from 21 to 23 August 1992. Collectors can buy the Philatelic Bureau's first day covers at the usual sales outlets only on the first day of issue. HongkongBank's CFN covers can be purchased at all 11 branches of HongkongBank throughout Singapore, the Singapore Philatelic Bureau, post offices and Singpex 92. The CFN covers and the limited print collection will be sold from 21 August while stocks last.

All the products of this issue, from the stamps to the datestamps, are beautifully designed and together they make a charming collection for stamp collectors and nature lovers.
