The focus of this issue is on edible local fruits. It is a subject all of us are familiar with, fruits being part of our everyday diet. It is therefore very exciting to see something so ordinary, something which we see almost everyday, depicted on stamps.

There is no lack of variety in the fruits one can buy in the local market. From common fruits such as banana, papaya and pineapple to imported ones such as apples, peaches and kiwi fruits, one can savour them all.

Because different fruits are available at different time of the year, the diversity of local fruits is also not fully appreciated.

Since the launch of the Fruit Tree Planting Campaign in the 1980s, more fruit trees have been seen in housing estates, public parks and schools. One can also visit the Fruit Tree Centre in Lim Chu Kang to experience the wide variety of fruit trees that can be grown locally.

In this issue, four types of local fruits namely, the papaya (20¢), pomegranate (35¢), starfruit (75¢) and durian ($2) are featured on the stamps. These fruits are either native to this part of the world or have been brought here by early settlers and traders and grown in this region for centuries. These local fruits, like many which are grown in this region, have in fact a high percentage of vitamins.

Without doubt, the durian, dubbed the "King of Tropical Fruit" has the highest food value. It is rich in carbohydrates, protein, fats and vitamins. For those who appreciate it, it is a highly sought after fruit.

Poh Siew Wah used watercolour as a medium to depict the four fruits on stamps. Based on close examination and scrutiny of the fruits and photographs he has taken of them, he did a skilful job of capturing details such as the texture, the unique shapes and the graduation in colours on the designs. The fruits depicted on the stamps, miniature sheet and four postcards look as luscious as the real things. These watercolour drawings are vibrant illustrations of the fruits we enjoy so much.

The miniature sheet and postcards incorporate the Bangkok 1993 World Stamp Exhibition logo. This stamp issue will be released in conjunction with this exhibition to be held in Bangkok from 1 to 10 October 1993.

The first day cover, presentation pack and datestamp are charming complements to the beautifully designed set of stamps, miniature sheet and postcards. A unique collection indeed.
