About the Designer
In our continuing series on Singaporean stamp designers, we cast our spotlight on Ms Alynn Teo. Alynn is no stranger to stamp designing. Some of her most memorable work include Singapore-Indonesia Joint Stamp Issue - Corals (2017), Areas of Historical Significance (2018), Anniversaries (Girl Guides, Outward Bound Singapore, Lions Club) (2017), and Tourism50 (2014).
How did you get started in stamp designing, and how long have you been in the field?
I was introduced to stamp designing through a friend who was working on a stamp issue. Due to a tight timeline, he had asked for my help to design some of the stamp products. This led to my being introduced to the wonderful people at SingPost. My first stamp design project was on the Singapore Grand Prix in 2008.
Can you describe the types of stamps you typically design, such as commemorative, definitive, or special editions?
I typically design a variety of stamps, with a focus on commemorative and anniversary issues.
What tools or software do you use in your stamp design work?
The tools and software I use largely depend on the design style I've envisioned. I often use a combination of watercolour painting and digital techniques, or working with softwares such as Illustrator and Photoshop to create digital art.
Are there any specific themes or subjects you particularly enjoy designing for stamps?
I particularly enjoy designing stamps with historical themes. Exploring Singapore's history is always fascinating, and there's a sense of discovery in every project. Additionally, I have an interest in depicting food-related themes.
Could you share a brief overview of your most recent or favorite stamp design project?
One of my favourite projects was the Singapore-Indonesia joint stamp issue on corals. Through research, it allowed me to delve into the amazing underwater world of corals and fishes. I was exceptionally pleased with the final outcome.
Do you have any specific sources of inspiration or artists who have influenced your stamp design style?
While I don't have specific artists who influenced my style, I do follow social media accounts on postage stamp designs to stay informed on both historical and contemporary design trends from around the world.
What aspects of stamp design do you find most fulfilling or rewarding in your work?
I find great satisfaction in leaving a piece of history for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
Have you encountered any interesting or unusual requests or challenges in your stamp design career?
Every stamp design project presents its unique challenges. Having more time during the initial design stage is always beneficial. As part of my own practice, I would revisit a design days later to ensure it meets the required quality for the issue.
In your opinion, what are the key elements that make a stamp design visually appealing and effective?
The key to a visually appealing and effective stamp design is to keep it informative yet simple, enabling a direct storytelling approach.
