How did you get started in stamp designing, and how long have you been in the field?
I've always been fascinated by a stamp's unique challenges and artistic presentation. I officially started my career in stamp design in 2019.
Can you describe the types of stamps you typically design, such as commemorative, definitive, or special editions?
My portfolio includes a mix of definitive series, aiming for timeless and recognisable designs, and more elaborate commemorative issues that allow for deeper storytelling through imagery. I also enjoy the creative freedom that comes with designing special edition stamps for particular occasions.
What tools or software do you use in your stamp design work?
My workflow typically involves initial sketches and concept development on paper, followed by digital execution using software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I find these tools offer the precision and flexibility needed for stamp design.
Are there any specific themes or subjects you particularly enjoy designing for stamps?
When it comes to stamp design, I'm particularly drawn to projects that involve historical buildings and the humanities, as they offer a fascinating intersection of research and visual interpretation.
Could you share a brief overview of your most recent or favorite stamp design project?
Looking back, one of my most cherished projects was the special edition stamp series dedicated to National Monuments in 2023. For this issue, I deliberately explored the delicate and expressive qualities of a watercolour style. This approach allowed for a softer, more evocative portrayal of these significant landmarks, aiming to capture not just their architectural details but also a sens of their historical presence and atmosphere. While translating the intricacies of these monuments into the fluid medium of watercolour presented its own unique set of challenges, the resulting visually striking designs made the entire process incredibly satisfying.
How do you ensure that your designs meet the technical specifications and guidelines set by postal authorities?
To ensure successful stamp production, I rigorously adhere to the postal authorities’ guidelines. This includes careful consideration of size, colour limitations, perforation requirements, mandatory elements, ink coverage, and paper type, ultimately resulting in designs that are both visually appealing and technically sound
What aspects of stamp design do you find most fulfilling or rewarding in your work?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing my designs become a tangible piece of history or a daily part of communication. Knowing that my artwork will travel across the world and potentially be collected and cherished is a unique and fulfilling feeling. I also enjoy the challenge of working within such a small format.
Do you have any specific sources of inspiration or artists who have influenced your stamp design style?
I draw inspiration from diverse areas such as photography, illustration, and typography. I’m particularly influenced by artists who have a strong sense of visual communication and can convey complex ideas with clarity and impact. I also look to historical stamp designs to understand the evolution of the art form. I also admire the work of Shao Bolin (Designer of the 1980 Monkey Stamp)
Have you encountered any interesting or unusual requests or challenges in your stamp design career
With the Purple Parade stamp issue, my intention was to create a design that was both visually striking and sensitive to the subject matter. The bold purple and white line art served to present the concept respectfully and informative.
In your opinion, what are the key elements that make a stamp design visually appealing and effective?
An effective stamp design needs to be visually engaging at a small scale. Clarity of image, a well-balanced composition, and a memorable visual hook are crucial. The design should also reflect the subject matter in a meaningful way and adhere to the technical requirements for printing and postage
