What got you inspired for the 2023 Collection of Singapore Stamps design?
A kaleidoscope is an object that embodies the idea of visual diversity and endless possibilities. Its complex patterns and vibrant colours have fascinated people for centuries, inspiring artists and designers in various fields. In the context of a stamp album design, the kaleidoscope concept serves as a powerful visual metaphor that reflects the multifaceted nature of stamp collecting and the excitement of exploring different cultures, themes and stories through stamps.
Just like the kaleidoscope, Singapore is a culturally rich and diverse country with a vibrant and colourful atmosphere. By using a range of colours and patterns throughout the pages, the design showcases the unique identity and character of each stamp issue, transforming a collection of stamps into a captivating experience for collectors and enthusiasts.
Moreover, the kaleidoscope concept also evokes a sense of playfulness and creativity, encouraging people to approach stamp collecting as a fun and engaging activity rather than a mundane hobby. The design can create a lasting impression on stamp collectors and capture the essence of what makes stamp collecting such a unique and fascinating pastime.

Graphics or photos are artfully arranged and manipulated to mimic the intricate and everchanging patterns of a kaleidoscope. Techniques involving layering and overlapping of visual elements are employed to craft mesmerising and intricate patterns, adding depth and complexity to the design. This invites collectors to explore the book in a more interactive and engaging way.
What are the concerns/ challenges you faced when designing and how did you overcome it?
The use of kaleidoscope patterns and intricate layering could risk overwhelming the viewers, making it challenging to find a harmonious design that is visually engaging without being overly complicated. We adopted an iterative design process, continually refining and simplifying the kaleidoscope patterns. This involved seeking feedback from the team and stakeholders, to ensure that the visual complexity was just right, and captivating without being overwhelming.
