Andy Koh - Designing Stamps for all Ages
In this latest Stamp Designer Q&A, we posed our usual questions to award-winning stamp designer Mr Andy Koh, whose unusually impressive portfolio of stamp projects include but not limited to Greetings (2017), Nursery Rhymes (2018) - winner at Singapore Creator Awards 2019, Zodiac Stamp Series Collector’s Sheet (2020 - 2031), Year of Celebrating SG Families (2022) and Games of the XXXIII Olympiad (2024).
How did you get started in stamp designing, and how long have you been in the field?
23 years ago, when I was working as an Art Director at a local design consultancy, I had the opportunity to pitch for a stamp design job. It was my first time designing a stamp. The subject was "World Stamp Championship 2004" with three themes: "Trade and Industry," "Communication and Technology," and "Leisure and Lifestyle." This stamp design series was selected and launched over a period of three years, with one theme for each year.
Can you describe the types of stamps you typically design, such as commemorative, definitive, or special editions?
I do not specialise in any specific type of stamps. I embrace all opportunities to explore and express my creativity, whether it's commemorative, definitive, or special edition stamps. Each project allows me to see how my designs are received by collectors and the public, which is an exciting and rewarding experience.
What tools or software do you use in your stamp design work?
I always start by hand-sketching my designs in my sketchbook to draft out initial concepts. Then, I use software like Adobe Illustrator and Procreate to create the final artwork. The combination of traditional and digital tools allows me to refine my ideas and produce high-quality designs.
Are there any specific themes or subjects you particularly enjoy designing for stamps?
As a designer, I don't have a specific favorite theme or subject. I am open to any challenges and enjoy exploring diverse topics. However, I often find myself creating designs that are whimsical, playful, and adorable, as they seem to resonate well with both collectors and the public.
Could you share a brief overview of your most recent or favorite stamp design project?
I’m currently working on the 2025 Snake Zodiac Collector’s Sheet, which is part of a 12-year cycle series. For this project, I’m using modern typography to feature the Chinese character for the zodiac on the main stamp, adorned with traditional paper-cut ornaments. The design draws inspiration from traditional Chinese paper-cutting, often seen during Lunar New Year celebrations. It symbolises luck and happiness. This, in essence, is central to my design concept.
Do you have any specific sources of inspiration or artists who have influenced your stamp design style?
I draw inspiration from various sources, including local materials and online research. When possible, I visit relevant sites or conduct a site reconnaissance to gain a deeper understanding of the subject before beginning my ideation process. This hands-on approach helps me create more authentic and impactful designs.
What aspects of stamp design do you find most fulfilling or rewarding in your work?
The most fulfilling part of my job is seeing the finished product in use, traveling around Singapore and even globally. Receiving an envelope with my stamp on it is an added bonus. Additionally, I’m grateful for the opportunity to help promote Singapore through stamps. It’s rewarding to publicise Singapore’s contributions and participation in regional and international affairs, communicate our identity worldwide, and recognise events or activities of importance to Singapore on a global stage.
In your opinion, what are the key elements that make a stamp design visually appealing and effective?
An attractive and successful stamp design incorporates clear imagery, a balanced color palette, and easily readable text. It maintains a harmonious composition and consistent theme while also reflecting cultural significance. Fine details, creative design elements, and a strong visual impact further enhance its appeal. The combination of these elements produces a functional and visually pleasing miniature masterpiece, which is ultimately appreciated by collectors and stakeholders alike.
