The story of Singapore's link with orchids began more than a century ago, when the first orchids exchange programme between Singapore and other countries such as the Philippines, Australia and England was recorded in 1875. The successful work of The Singapore Botanic Gardens in cultivating man-made orchid hybrids in sterile media led to subsequent active breeding of many fine hybrids and made Singapore renown as the world's foremost producer of high-quality Aranda and Mokara hybrids. Bigger plans for the industry are in store. By 1995, Singapore aims to boost the industry from its current yearly yield of some $20 million to about $70 million.

The familiar Orang Utan, endearingly referred to as Ah Meng, will once again be star. This time, on 30¢ postage stamps. Sharing the spotlight are the Sun Bear (20¢ stamp), Slow Loris (75¢ stamp) and Large Mouse Deer ($2 stamp). Together, they make up the caste for the Animal Series - Southeast Asian Mammals issue scheduled for release on 13 Jan 93.

A complete Zodiac cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five simple cycles of twelve years each. Twelve animals signs are assigned to each of the 12 years in combination with the five main elements of gold, wood, water, fire and earth.

The Rabbit is the fourth zodiac animal in the cycle, to be featured in this stamp series. The Year of the Rabbit is said to be peaceful and congenial after the ferocious Tiger year. The set of two stamps depicting graphic designs of the loveable Rabbit would be released on 15 Jan 99.

The highly intelligent, charming and enterprising Rat starts off a new cycle on the Chinese zodiac calendar. Three graphic illustrations of this lively Rat ushering in the new Lunar Year 2008 are shown in this set of 3 stamps with denominations 1st Local, 65c and $1.10.
