Singpex '92 was successfully held almost a year ago. It is now time for new and avid stamp collectors to get ready for the next philatelic gathering at Singpex '93.
Singpex '93 will be the 16th stamp exhibition organised on a national scale to promote philately in Singapore. For 1993, the focus is on ASEAN Youth collections. The organiser, the Association of Singapore Philatelists (a national body of stamp clubs in the Republic) and the sponsor, Singapore Post Private Limited are working hard to organise as many activities and attractions to make Singpex '93 another success. This event will be held once again at Hotel New Otani from 21 to 23 August 1993.
What can stamp collectors and visitors look forward to at Singpex '93? To make this event another special exhibition, the Organising Committee will be flying in knowledgeable speakers from New Zealand and Australia to talk about youth philately and thematic collections.
The Youth Philatelic Seminar will be held at the Plum Room, Hotel New Otani on 21 August from 2.30pm to 6.00pm. Admission is free. So take advantage of it! The Thematic Workshop will be held the next day on 22 August also at the Plum Room from 9.00am to 4.00pm. For a small fee of $30, participants not only get to learn at the Workshop, they will have the opportunity to interact with speakers and fellow collectors over lunch and two teas. This is great value for money indeed.
For those who are looking for great buys, postal administrations and renown stamp dealers from the United Kingdom, the United States of America to as far east as Hong Kong and down south to Australia and New Zealand will be setting up sales booths to meet your needs. Another highlight of Singpex '93 is a stamp auction to be organised by the famous dealer, James Song Philatelic & Victor Morris Team. This auction will be held too at the Plum Room on 22 August from 4.00pm to 6.00pm.
For those who wish to view stamp collections, head for the Phoenix Ballroom and study the competitive exhibits from ASEAN youths. In the Court of Honour section, collectors can get a glimpse of the rare exhibits such as the Mauritius Collection which has a market value of $4.8 million or the Burmese Collection which won the Grand Prix International Award at Polska '93 world stamp exhibition. Asean postal administrations including Singapore Post will put up official exhibits at Singpex '93 too.
For an idea of what constitutes winning entries, look out for displays with the different types of awards. Juries for this stamp competition are well-known philatelists accredited to the Federation of International Philatelists.
Singapore Post will set the stage with the release of a set of stamps and a booklet on Nature Series-Butterflies on 21 August in conjunction with the exhibition (more information on this issue are on page 3). Special first day issue datestamp, theme day event datestamps and exhibition cachet are available for collection at Singpex '93. The Organising Committee will be producing a special exhibition cover to facilitate the collection of these attractive postmarks.
Slogan die publicising Singpex '93 will make its first debut from 2 to 23 August. Exhibition covers bearing the slogan die message on 2 August 93 and from 21 to 23 August will be on sale at Singpex '93. Do not miss out the all-time favourite postage label vending machine too.
Collectors may be interested to know that Singapore Post will be using, for the first time ever, a specially designed exhibition metal datestamp to cancel stamps on registered parcels and letters at the Singapore Postal Service Counter. This datestamp will be reserved for exclusive use at Singpex and world stamp exhibitions held in Singapore.
Each Singpex is an unique adventure for all stamp collectors. If you have never been to one before, do so in August and savour the joy of stamp collecting. If you are a regular at Singpex exhibitions, then Singpex '93 is a must, what with all the attractions and activities lined up for you by the organiser and Singapore Post.
Entrance to Singpex '93 is free. The exhibition will open from 12 noon-8pm on 21 August 93 and from 10am to 8pm on 22 and 23 August 93. We in the Singpex '93 Organising Committee and Singapore Post, hope to see all of you there.
