The third issue of the Singapore '95 Orchids Series will be released on 13 Aug 93. It will also make its appearance in conjunction with the Asian International Invitation Stamp Exhibition - Taipei '93 to be held from 14 to 19 Aug 93.

This 1993 issue is third in a series of five issues to be released for Singapore '95 - the first World Stamp Exhibition to be hosted by Singapore in 1995. Proceeds from the sales of this issue on the first day will be used to fund this major event.

Like the previous issues, the 1993 set comprises a gutter pair of different orchids and a colourful miniature sheet showcasing parts of Singapore's attractions. The flowers specially chosen for this issue are the Vanda Sumatrana and the Phalaenopsis Amabilis, two very beautiful orchids. Vanda Sumatrana grows and flowers well in Singapore. It has shiny sepals and petals and a strong fragrance, especially in the morning. Phalaenopsis Amabilis has flowers which are variable in size with a light, long lasting fragrance. It is one of the most beautiful species and also one of the most popular for hybridisation.

The miniature sheet illustrates an architectural scene of Singapore, a scene which captures the rich and unique vernacular architecture of the 1920s. This kind of architectural style is characterised by ornate facades, generous use of colourful tiles, very intricate handcrafted details and plasterwork. This piece of design on the miniature sheet is indeed a reflection of our history, as buildings are meant to be. They are in a way embodiments of the country's social, cultural and aesthetic values of the past.

Both the Singapore '95 logo and the Taipei 93 exhibition logo are incorporated in the miniature sheet.

The ancillary products including first day cover, presentation pack, datestamp design and poster are attractively designed to complement this special stamp issue. To maintain consistency with the other issues in this series, the artist, Chua Ban Har, worked on a concept similar to the previous issues. The first day cover, presentation pack and poster designs feature close-up pictures of leaves and flowers.

To again reflect our participation in the Taipei exhibition, a Mandarin translation of the text is incorporated in the first day cover, presentation pack and poster. All the ancillary products also bear the Taipei 93 logo.

The datestamp design is a reflection of the Vanda Sumatrana.
