Come 18 May 1994, collectors can look forward to a set of stamps that celebrates the joy and exuberance of arts. The four stamps to commemorate the 1994 Singapore Festival of Arts feature the four popular art forms namely Dance, Drama, Music and Fine Arts.

The Festival of Arts first made its appearance in 1977 and it has not looked back since. From its humble beginnings with an attendance of less than 7000 people, it has made steady improvements over the years, establishing itself as a premier cultural event. The biennial Festival has been drawing together the people of Singapore in celebration of their rich and varied cultural heritage. It has also enriched the cultural life of Singaporeans by offering some of the best talents from Asia and the West.

Internationally renowned choreographers, musicians and drama artistes give local performers a yardstick by which to measure their own work and learn new techniques. On a wider scale, the Festival has given Singaporeans a good opportunity to improve their quality of life through an appreciation of both the performing and visual arts.

It is therefore most apt at this point in time for a set of stamps to be released to commemorate this spectacular event. The stamps are beautiful representations of the many and varied activities of the Festival, giving the viewer a fair idea of the range of performances to be enjoyed. Each of the four stamps has been carefully illustrated to depict the wide range of performances and activities within each of the four components of the Festival. Despite having so much to show, the designer, Elsie Koh, did not compromise on fine details and maintained a balance through the use of colours etc to unify the designs.

The four postcards depicting Dance, Drama, Music and Fine Arts as well as the supporting items such as first day cover and presentation packs are equally beautiful.
