Singapore's reputation as a Garden City had not come easy for this small island. What started out as a Tree Planting Campaign to green Singapore some forty years ago has transformed beyond providing just a green infrastructure. As early as the 10th century AD, Arab traders journeyed through Singapore waters on their expeditions to China and Indonesia. Since then, vessels began frequenting what is now the Straits of Singapore. With the rapid growth in trade, a large number and variety of merchant sailing ships also called at Singapore.

In modern and cosmopolitan Singapore, the celebrations of the various festivals help to keep traditional values alive as well as remind the people of the unique myths, cultural beliefs and superstitions that are an indispensable part of Singapore multi-ethnic heritage.

Depicted in this set of stamps, issued to mark the 10th year of National Courtesy Campaign, are some of the basic acts of courtesy. Featured on the stamps is Singa, the courtesy mascot, which has given the campaign a unique identity since its introduction in 1982. The 10¢ stamp depicts the need to greet neighbours; the 30¢ stamp the necessity to queue at service counters; and the $1 stamp shows the need to help our elders.
