A look back in time

The dawn of a new millennium is a time for reflection and of anticipation.

The 20th century saw Singapore being transformed from an obscure fishing village to a great seaport and modern city. A British colony with immigrants from all parts of the world, Singapore attained independence in 1965. She is now enjoying the fruits of a proactive government, with good housing, transportation and education contributing to economic progress and a high standard of living.

Two sets of millennium stamps will be released on 31 Dec 99 and 1 Jan 2000 to mark this momentous event.

Released on 31 Dec 99, is a se-tenant block of 10 stamps which depicts the significant milestones in Singapore's development in the 20th century. Entitled 20th Century Singapore, each of the stamp has its own theme namely; Colonialism, Immigration, Japanese Occupation, Transportation, Housing, Education, Government, National Service, Tourism and Economic Progress.

This is the last stamp issue of the year and of the century and will be treasured as a succinct pictorial record of Singapore's progress in the 20th century.
