A walk down the memory lane of early days Singapore - flea markets at the streets and by the river scene is the second series in Past Street Scenes. These familiar nostalgic scenes bring back many fond and good memories of the early builders in Singapore.

Along the riverside, one could see coolies transporting goods, cargoes and live stocks from bumboats to the river quay, with the foreman overseeing them working hard. Businessmen or "towkays" were there daily to trade as well. "Samsui" women also passed by these stretch of riverside as they travel in and out daily to carry out their work. It was a place that flourished with trade and activities.

Flea markets in those days were a simple affair. Similar to our Pasar Malam (or Night Market in Malay) of today, one could buy every day items and household goods such as clothes, slippers, nail clippers, make-up kits, cooking utensils, and even books. It was the open-air department stores of the day and anyone with the right kind of resources could set up a stall and peddle their wares.
