This is the third stamp issue featuring national monuments, the first two being released in 1978 and 1984. Through the eyes of the artist Leo Teck Chong, four monuments are portrayed from a unique perspective. The format of a se-tenant strip of two stamps brings out beautifully the distinctive architectural styles and motifs on the exterior and interior of each monument viz Hong San See Temple (20 cents), Abdul Gaffoor Mosque (50 cents), Sri Perumal Temple (75 cents) and St Andrew's Cathedral ($1).

Using the medium of colour pencil, Leo Teck Chong has meticulously executed the nuances of form and colour of each monument: the dragon-design column which stands sturdy near the entrance to Hong San See, the elaborate dome of the Abdul Gaffoor Mosque, the imposing tower of deities of the Sri Perumal Temple and the kaleidoscope of colours on the stained glass windows of the St Andrew's Cathedral. Each monument portrayed is an architectural wonder in its own way.

The architectural theme is carried through the ancillary items of this stamp issue. The first day of issue datestamp features a tile design which also appears on the reverse of the first day cover. The presentation pack opens up like a door with the first panel displaying the se-tenant strip of stamps in their splendour, affixed in clear stamp mounting strips. The introductory paragraphs are illustrated with a drawing of a window and a colourful architectural motif. The remaining panels of the presentation pack feature an illustration of an architectural feature of each monument. This concept is also expressed in the poster.

Collectors sending Chinese New Year cards to their friends may want to affix the 20 cents stamp on the envelopes for that extra touch. Whether it is the upper or lower 20 cents stamp, the stamp would look equally beautiful against festive pink envelopes.
