Preservation of Singapore's historical landmarks is crucial, as they are important reminders and representations of our past. Our built heritage is as important as our cultural heritage in defining our sense of identity and pride.

In this National Day stamp issue to celebrate our nation’s 39th birthday, we focused on our built heritage, featuring four of our treasured landmarks in the stamps. The landmarks featured are namely, City Hall (1st Local x 2 designs), Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall (30cts x 2 designs), Supreme Court (60cts x 2 designs) and The Istana ($1 x 2 designs).

This set of 8 stamps is beautifully illustrated by stamp designer Leo Teck Chong who did the 1991 "National Monuments Series". Four of the stamps will show the profile of these grand dames while the other four will feature the intricate workmanship of the old artisans as seen on the columns, gates, pillars and structures of these buildings of our past.

This stamp issue is released to celebrate Singapore's National Day on 9 August 2004. Part proceeds from the sales of the First Day Cover will be contributed to the Community Chest of Singapore.
