Rio 2016

Issue date 05 Aug 2016

Overview

The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, is the thirty-first Summer Olympic Games, the world's largest international multi-sport event that is held every four years. The 2016 Summer Olympics is commonly known as Rio 2016, as this competition will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The games will take place from 5 to 21 August 2016 and around 10,500 athletes from more than 200 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will take part in this sporting event. The games will feature 28 sports — including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009.

The Rio 2016 Organising Committee commits itself to “deliver an excellent Games, with memorable celebrations that will promote the global image of Brazil, underpinned by social and urban sustainable transformation through sport, contributing to the growth of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements”.

Rio 2016 would be the 17th time that Singapore will be represented at the Olympics, the first being 1948. Singapore’s recent achievements at the Olympics include a silver medal (table tennis) at Beijing 2008 and two bronze medals (table tennis) at London 2012. Team Singapore looks forward to receive greater success and fly the Singapore flag high in Rio!
