One of the most important intergovernmental organisations for Singapore is ASEAN. ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand. The founding member countries were Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Today, it is a union of eleven countries with the aim to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region, and to promote regional peace and stability. The first Singapore stamp issue related to ASEAN was launched on 4 April 1971, four years after the establishment of ASEAN. The title of the stamp issue was “Visit ASEAN Year”. The themes featured on the stamps were trishaws, the Singapore River, a scene at a Chinese temple, the Singapore waterfront skyline, and places of worship. Its objective is to focus on the development and promotion of tourism destinations and attractions within the ASEAN region.
