Movie-going has always been the popular or rather, favourite pastime of Singaporeans. This trend began at the Grand Cafe in Paris in 1895, and years later in 1902, when an Indian travelling film exhibitionist set up a tent to show his silent films to a paying audience, that was the first time that the locals in Singapore got a taste of the cinema experience. The first movie theatre in Singapore appeared in 1904 when the Paris Cinematograph was opened at Victoria Street. Eventually, more theatres appeared with Shaw Organisation operating their own 'proper' cinema known as The Empire in 1927, and Cathay Organisation raised the curtains at The Cathay Cinema in 1939. The Cathay Cinema was to be the first cinema complex as well as the tallest building in Singapore then. As the years passed, many of the cinema theatres were either closed, relocated or upgraded with newer technologies, and this set of stamps, featuring The Majestic, Capitol, The Cathay, Rex and Queens aims to bring back fond memories of many especially when these grand dames were at its prime in the past.
