In support of the SG Cares Movement, our national movement to foster a more caring and inclusive society, the Singapore Mascots stamp issue features five iconic mascots representing a unique aspect of Singapore’s spirit of inclusion, compassion and kindness from the heart. This series brings together Nila ( advocating active sports ), Sharity ( advocating caring and sharing ), Singa ( advocating kindness ), Captain Green ( advocating caring for the environment ) and Water Wally ( championing water conservation ).

There are a total of 12 animal signs in the Chinese calendar based on five cycles of 12 years each, with each cycle tempered by one of the five Chinese elements of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. According to Chinese astrology and belief, the traits of these zodiac animals not only shape the personalities of people born under the respective sign but also their lives and the events of the year. Apart from the Ox, the other Chinese zodiac animals are the Rat, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

The year 2024 marks the reign of the Dragon and the fifth animal in the Zodiac series on the Chinese calendar. This confident, brave and active Dragon is depicted on this set of stamps (1st Local and $2.00).

Singapore is home to more than 2,000 species of endemic and native species. Despite losing more than 90% of our original vegetation by 1900 and urbanisation and development since the 1960s, our greenery continues to flourish. This is due to careful planning and implementation of conservation strategies such as the Species Recovery Programme under the National Parks Board's (NParks) Nature Conservation Master Plan, which aims to conserve native flora and fauna, thereby ensuring their long-term survival in both our natural and urban environments. As an island nation, Singapore has many coastlines which are often covered with coastal plant species. Coastal vegetation is mainly found in mangrove forests, sandy beaches and rocky shores or cliffs such as those at Pulau Ubin, Labrador Nature Reserve and offshore islands like Sentosa and St. John's Island. These coastal habitats are characterised by seemingly inhospitable conditions such as high light intensity, exposure to wind, salt spray and a vastly changeable environment from the shifting tides.

Television has entered its golden age, as Singapore commemorates 50 years of TV broadcasting this year. As TV marks its golden jubilee, Singapore will enter a new chapter in its television broadcasting history. From the end of 2013, Singapore's free-to-air TV will switch from analogue to digital TV. Razor-sharp images and superior audio will become a reality, when all seven free-to-air channels are transmitted digitally using the Digital Video Broadcasting - Second Generation Terrestrial (DVB-T2) broadcasting standard. The move will prepare Singapore for the future of TV, paving the way for more high-definition channels and new services that local viewers can enjoy for many years to come. This stamp issue features the significant milestones of the journey in the 50 years of TV broadcasting.
