Singapore's approach to development recognises a need to protect the best elements of the past. Many of our historic buildings and houses serve as Singapore's historical landmarks as well as a reminder of our social history. In this joint issue with Belgium, we look at shophouses in both countries giving a unique view of the different historical architecture in both countries.

In Singapore, the shophouse captures much of Singapore's historical development. Shophouses -- narrow, small scale terraced houses that are used for work and dwelling and offer heat and rain protection for the passing public -- are an important building type in Singapore's architectural heritage.

In this joint issue, a shophouse in Kandahar Street (60c stamp) in the Kampong Glam district and a row of shophouses in Bukit Pasoh ($1 stamp) in Singapore are featured. On Belgium side, the Belgian Centre for Comic Strip Art (1st Local) and the Museum of Musical Instruments ($2) are featured.
