The Commonwealth is an association of countries once linked together as part of the British Empire. Commonwealth Day is celebrated annually on the second Monday in March. It is a day for all, especially children to appreciate the richness and diversity of culture, religion, language within countries of the Commonwealth.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was formed on 8 August 1967 as a show of unity among the countries in the region.

Into the new Millennium

This year Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry [SCCCI] celebrates a century of excellence with a set of five commemorative stamps ensconced within a distinctive Chinese fan-shaped design, which embodies the SCCCI's deep linkages with Chinese culture.

The focus of this issue is on edible local fruits. It is a subject all of us are familiar with, fruits being part of our everyday diet. It is therefore very exciting to see something so ordinary, something which we see almost everyday, depicted on stamps.

Four colourful paintings by our young kindergarten artists will be highlighted on the next set of commemorative stamps to mark the UNICEF Children's Day on Oct. 1.

Art on stamps. This is the theme for the stamp issue that proudly presents a set of four stamps on contemporary paintings by four talented local artists. Two of these artists are "pioneers" who together with their contemporaries helped lay a sound and solid foundation for the development of arts in Singapore. The four paintings are chosen from the National Museum's permanent collection.

3 August 1492 remains a significant date in the history of mankind. For it was on that date that Christopher Columbus, reputedly the finest sailor of his time, set sail for the East Indies. Leading an entourage of some 90 men in three ships, Columbus sought to fulfil his dream of reaching the fabled lands of the East, renown for their jewels, spices, silver and gold. Unknown to Columbus, he discovered the New World on this historic expedition and three others which followed later.

From 12 to 20 June 1993, Singapore will stage the XVII SEA Games, playing host to the 10 participating nations of Southeast Asia. Preparations are already underway and all sportsmen and sport enthusiasts are looking forward eagerly to this much awaited international event.

There is a colourful calender of festivals, religious and cultural events celebrated all year round in Singapore. This set of eight stamps, four No-Value Indicator (NVI) stamps and four 30c stamps, features four of Singapore's major festivals, namely : Hari Raya Adilfitri, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas.

This series of stamps depicts the unique appeal of 4 marine fishes viz the Clown Triggerfish (15¢ stamp), the Majestic Angelfish (30¢ stamp), the Emperor Angelfish (75¢ stamp) and the Royal Empress Angelfish ($1 stamp). These beautiful fishes are either found in pairs or are solitary in habit. Their diet consists of brine shrimp, chopped fish and algae material.
