As early as in the late 1950's, local artists had expressed the wish to have a national museum devoted to the visual arts. On 21 Oct 95, their wish finally came true. The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) opened its doors to the public. This set of stamps, featuring the works of four of Singapore's pioneer artists, commemorates the opening of the Singapore Art Museum. The SAM is sited at the historic St Joseph's Institution building. The stamp designs depict four beautiful works of the artists and incorporate an illustration of the restored SJI building.

Singapore is so urbanised that it is easy to overlook the sheer abundance and variety of wild birds which it offers. Added to the resident species are the equally large number of visiting birds during the annual migrations through Singapore. Birdwatchers are also thrilled by the relative ease in switching from rainforest to reservoirs and parkland, mudflats and mangroves to observe birds attracted to different habitats. In this issue, the focus is on four species of Herons which are fairly common resident birds in Singapore.

Trees have always symbolised growth and life. Yet in our day and age, we are witnessing a rapid degeneration of part of our world heritage: our forests.

It is estimated that over 10 million species of plant and animal live in rainforests. Though they cover only 6% of the Earth's land surface, they support over 50% of the planet's plant and animal species.

This is the third stamp issue featuring national monuments, the first two being released in 1978 and 1984. Through the eyes of the artist Leo Teck Chong, four monuments are portrayed from a unique perspective. The format of a se-tenant strip of two stamps brings out beautifully the distinctive architectural styles and motifs on the exterior and interior of each monument viz Hong San See Temple (20 cents), Abdul Gaffoor Mosque (50 cents), Sri Perumal Temple (75 cents) and St Andrew's Cathedral ($1).

This set of four stamps will be released to commemorate the ever popular Olympic Games. This year's Olympic Games, to be held in Atlanta, USA, is also the Centennial Olympic Games. Through the 100 years since the first Olympic torch was lit, the principles and ideals of the Olympic Movement have been upheld. This set of designs depict the popular Olympic sports played in Singapore.

On 9 Oct 96, World Post Day, a set of stamps will be jointly released by Singapore and China, featuring the scenery of Singapore and Suzhou. Singapore will also release a miniature sheet of the two stamps.
