When the threat of COVID-19 emerged in Singapore, the Ministry of Education created the Soaper 5 – a band of young superheroes, who would guide our students in keeping themselves and their friends safe and healthy.

They are disarmingly cute, charismatic, and have been winning fans with their charming winsome appeal. SingPost presents five of Singapore’s endearing mascots in this series of commemorative stamps. Meet Merli, a heart-warming and whimsical character created by Singapore Tourism Board, who leads you to discover the best and most interesting parts of Singapore; Smiley, the savvy POSB squirrel who has taught generations of children to save up, not squander; and Teamy the Bee from the National Productivity Board (they are both retired) — he didn’t have a stinger but sometimes carried a light bulb! There is also Water Sally, the well-travelled water sustainability advocate; and the empathetic Blood Buddy, who encourages blood donors along their blood donation journey. Instantly recognisable, they are among our favourite local icons.

On 21 Feb 2008, Singapore celebrated with fanfare when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland, announced its decision to hold the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010 in Singapore. Since then, intense works has been carried out by the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) to ensure that preparations of Singapore 2010 are well on track. Significant progress has been made in the development of an integrated sport, culture and education programme.

A hawker centre or food centre (MR FU or Shi in Chinese) refers to a collection of stalls selling different types of inexpensive cooked food, drinks and desserts. The stalls are housed in a covered, non-air-conditioned, open complex, and there is a common seating area for customers. Though hot and noisy, the quality and affordability of hawker food continue to draw the crowds, and with a reputation for eating as a national past time, it is a common sight to see Singaporeans queuing at their favourite hawker stalls across the island.

This set of stamps is released to mark the Golden Jubilee of the National Wages Council in 2022. Since 1972, the Council has convened annually to deliberate and formulate wage guidelines for employers to meet the needs of businesses, workers and the economy. Comprising representatives from employer groups, unions and the government, the Council has played a critical role in fostering tripartite partnership and harmonious labour-management relations in Singapore. Through five decades of tripartite collaboration, the Council has contributed to the sustainable growth of wages in Singapore. This has enabled Singapore to build a climate of industrial harmony that is conducive to economic growth, social stability, and a higher standard of living for all Singaporeans.

Since our early years, Singapore has sought to balance economic development with environmental protection and social inclusion.

Between 1854, when the then Singapore Volunteer Rifle Corps was formed, and our independence in 1965, Singapore had survived a World War, suffered the indignity of a Japanese Occupation and struggled against communist insurgents. Through these fires of baptism, nationhood was forged. Armed with only two infantry battalions, two modest training ships and no air force whatsoever, Singapore stood alone facing the economic and political uncertainties that came with independence. There was a pressing need for a credible armed force and the question of how to create a viable one, in view of Singapore's limited manpower and economic resources.

On 28 May 2009, the first five stations, namely: Marymount, Bishan, Lorong Chuan, Serangoon and Bartley, of the 33.3km Circle Line (CCL) were added into the present SMRT railway system, enhancing convenience and connectivity for the nation. The remaining 24 stations is targeted to open from 2010 onwards.

The inaugural 2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix™ will roar into town on a street circuit of public roads around the Marina Bay area - right in the heart of Singapore. Set against the backdrop of downtown Singapore, spectators will get a view of the garden city as the circuit winds past historic landmarks such as City Hall and modern buildings along the Marina Bay, such as the Esplanade.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Five other countries – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam later joined in to make up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN. Over the years, the 10 ASEAN member countries have built strong and close relationships. ASEAN has since matured into a community focused on economic integration and growth, and consensus-building. This is the “ASEAN Way” and it has resulted in unprecedented growth and stability.
